Πρώτο και πιο αυθεντικό το "Ten Bells", με το απαραίτητο στριμωξίδι να το κάνει ζεστό και φιλικό και τους δύο μεγάλους πίνακες να γράφουν μόνο για "φυσικά" κρασιά. Από τονLaureano Serres μέχρι τον Bruno Duchene φιάλες όλων των τρελών και παλαβών "εναλλακτικών" φιγουράριζαν στις λίστες και τα ράφια του μπαρ!

To "Ten Bells"

Για ξεκίνημα δοκιμάσαμε ένα Cheverney του Domaine Tessier που ήταν ευχάριστο και με αρκετά δροσιστική οξύτητα. Αν είχαμε φτάσει και δέκα λεπτά νωρίτερα θα προλαβαίναμε και την "Oyster's Happy Hour" και θα απολαμβάναμε το κρασί μας με ωμά όστρακα από δύο διαφορετικές περιοχές με ένα δολάριο το κομμάτι. Δεν περίμενα ποτέ πως θα συναντούσα happy hour για στρείδια αλλά απ'ότι φαίνεται στην Νέα Υόρκη μπορείς να συναντήσεις τα πάντα!

Το μοναδικό μειονέκτημα είναι πως λόγω της πολυκοσμίας δεν προλαβαίνει κανείς να μιλήσει με τους bar-tenders οι οποίοι είναι μόνιμα απασχολημένοι με το να σερβίρουν το ένα ποτήρι πίσω από το άλλο και έτσι είναι δύσκολο να πάρει κανείς πληροφορίες για τα κρασιά της λίστας που του είναι άγνωστα.

Επόμενος σταθμός μας το Blue Ribbon που αποτελεί μέρος της ομώνυμης αλυσίδας εστιατορίων. Ένα μικρό μπαρ που χωράει το πολύ είκοσι άτομα αλλά έχει εκπληκτική λίστα κρασιών -μεταξύ αυτών και Παλιοκαλιά- και εξειδικευμένο προσωπικό. Επίσης διαθέτει καταπληκτική κουζίνα με μεζέδες που συνδυάζονται καταπληκτικά με τα κρασιά της λίστας.

Εκεί, μεταξύ άλλων, ήπιαμε ένα εξαιρετικό Nebbiolo Langhe του '08 από την Cascina Ca'Rossa, τανικό και νευρώδες με ζωικές νότες, όσο ακριβώς χρειάζονταν για να του δώσουν την απαιτούμενη πολυπλοκότητα. Σε συνδυασμό με τα "καναπεδάκια" με μοσχαρίσια γλώσσα ήταν το κάτι άλλο!

Πάρα πολύ καλό και το λευκό Savennieres "Roches aux moines" του '92 από το Domaine aux Moines με φοβερά αρώματα τσαγιού και άλλων βοτάνων και νότες από κερί μέλισσας. Το στόμα ήταν γεμάτο και σαρκώδες αλλά παράλληλα είχε και μία υπέροχη δροσιστική οξύτητα. Ένα μεγάλο Chenin Blanc από μία σπάνια ονομασία προέλευσης και ένα ξακουστό Domaine που δεν απογοήτευσε τις προσδοκίες μας και ήταν πολύ καλός συνδυασμός με το μεζέ με βάση την καβουρόψυχα που μας προσέφεραν τα παιδιά του μπαρ.

Η έκπληξη της βραδιάς ήταν όμως μία "Αμερικανίδα" Roussane από τον αμπελώνα "Tablas Creek" ο οποίος συνεργάζεται με το φημισμένο Domaine de Beaucastel και εξειδικεύεται σε ποικιλίες του Ροδανού. Υπέροχη φρεσκάδα, νότες αχλαδιού πλεγμένες όμορφα με μελένια αρώματα, πολύ ισορροπημένο στόμα και ατέλειωτη διάρκεια. Να λοιπόν που και το Paso Robles έχει terroir για Roussane που μπορεί να μεγαλουργήσει!

Τρίτο και καλύτερο το μπαρ "terroir" στην περιοχή Tribeca. Το τέρουαρ είναι ένα μεγάλο "σχολείο" του κρασιού σε μία πολύ όμορφη περιοχή του Μανχάταν. Ο κατάλογος του είναι 66 σελίδες και ανανεώνεται κάθε μήνα. Το φετινό καλοκαίρι είναι Summer of Riesling και μπορεί κανείς να μάθει τα πάντα για την ποικιλία αυτήν ενώ απολαμβάνει το κρασάκι του στο μπαρ, να συμμετάσχει σε μίνι κρουαζιέρες και άλλες εκδηλώσεις με συνοδεία κρασιών της Γερμανικής ποικιλίας και να παρακολουθήσει σεμινάρια σχετικά με την ιστορία της, τις περιοχές καλλιέργειάς της, τους μάστερς του Riesling και πολλά άλλα θέματα. 

Επίσης, κατά το διάστημα αυτό οι ετικέτες από Riesling καταλαμβάνουν πάνω από τον μισό κατάλογο ενώ υπάρχουν σπάνιες σοδειές και παραγωγοί τους οποίους βρίσκει κανείς κατά αποκλειστικότητα. Ενδιάμεσα, στον κατάλογο βρίσκει κανείς πάρα πολλές πληροφορίες για την ποικιλία ενώ ο Χάρυ Πότερ και οι υπόλοιποι ήρωες της ταινίας για την οποία γίνεται πανζουρλισμός αυτή την στιγμή στις Η.Π.Α., φιγουράρουν που και που με μπλουζάκια "summer of riesling" και από κάτω εξηγούνται οι λόγοι για τους οποίους ο κάθε ένας από τους ήρωες χρειάζεται να πιει riesling φέτος το καλοκαίρι.

Κορυφαίο είναι το σχόλιο στον κακό της ταινίας "Lord Voldemort" ο οποίος χρειάζεται να πιει λίγο Riesling για να ξεπεράσει τον καημό που δεν θα καταφέρει να κερδίσει την αθανασία και συνεχίζει:

"...Και όμως υπάρχουν χειρότερο πράγματα από τον θάνατο

-Να πίνεις Chardonnay (μάλλον εννοεί εκτός Βουργουνδίας!)

-Να ζεις στο Μιλγουόκι

-Να είσαι υπουργός οικονομικών της Ελλάδος..."

Δεν είναι σε κρίση η Ελλάδα, κυρία Σμιθ, αλλά κάποιοι από τους συνομιλητές σας!, της Σοφίας Βούλυεψη, elzoni.gr 10/08/2011

Καινούργιο κοσκινάκι μου και πού να σε κρεμάσω. Η βρετανική εφημερίδα «Guardian» έχει εδώ και μήνες δημιουργήσει μια μόνιμη στήλη υπό τον γενικό τίτλο «Greece in Crisis» (Η Ελλάδα σε κρίση). 

Την επιμελείται η ανταποκρίτρια της εφημερίδας στην Ελλάδα Ελένα Σμιθ, ενώ κατά καιρούς συνδράμουν και άλλοι Βρετανοί δημοσιογράφοι που επισκέπτονται τη χώρα.

Η γενική εικόνα που δίνεται είναι μια χώρα σε διάλυση, βουτηγμένη στην ανεργία, με στρατιές νεόπτωχων, με διαλυμένα νοσοκομεία και με απεργίες και ταραχές που κάνουν δύσκολη τη ζωή του τουρίστα – ενώ την ίδια ώρα το κόστος των υπηρεσιών παραμένει υψηλό. 

Πρέπει να ψάξεις πολύ – και κυρίως στη γνώμη ξένων που αγαπούν την Ελλάδα – για να ανακαλύψεις κάτι από τον χαμένο δυναμισμό της χώρας, κάτι από την αίγλη του παρελθόντος.

Οι καθημερινοί άνθρωποι, διηγούνται εμπειρίες δραματικές από τους χώρους της δουλειάς τους – από τα νοσοκομεία ως τα ναυπηγεία – προφανώς μη λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ότι αυτά αναμεταδίδονται και δημιουργούν κακές εντυπώσεις για όποιον θα θελήσει να επισκεφθεί την Ελλάδα.

Έχουν τον πόνο τους και θέλουν να τον πουν. Δεν είναι εκπαιδευμένοι να σκέπτονται, να φέρονται εθνικά, να βάζουν πάνω απ’ όλα το Κοινό Καλό.

Δυστυχώς, όμως, το ίδιο κάνουν και κάποια δημόσια πρόσωπα.

Εκεί, όμως, που τρελαίνεται κανείς είναι με την συνέντευξη που έδωσε ο Δήμαρχος Αθηναίων! Εμφανίζεται να λέει στην Σμιθ, που μάλιστα το χρησιμοποιεί για lead (πρόλογο), πως η εικόνα της ελληνικής πρωτεύουσας είναι παρακμιακή και πόρρω απέχει από την εικόνα της πόλης που φιλοξένησε τους Ολυμπιακούς του 2004! 

Η συνέντευξη του δημάρχου συνοδεύεται από το ανάλογο (της συνέντευξης) φωτογραφικό υλικό: Εικόνες από τις ταραχές και τις άγριες συγκρούσεις διαδηλωτών με την αστυνομία. Και με την ανάλογη λεζάντα: Βία στην Αθήνα!

Η δημοσιογράφος γράφει πως κοντά στο Δημαρχείο υπάρχει ένα πανό με την επιγραφή «Όχι στα ναρκωτικά και στην πορνεία. Όχι άλλη ανοχή». Και σημειώνει ότι οι καταστηματάρχες της περιοχής της είπαν πως το πανό τοποθετήθηκε πριν ο κ. Καμίνης αναλάβει τα καθήκοντά του, τον περασμένο Ιανουάριο. 

Τα πράγματα, γράφει στο ρεπορτάζ της η Σμιθ, έχουν έκτοτε χειροτερέψει: Πόρνες από τη Σομαλία κάνουν πεζοδρόμιο ολημερίς και ολονυχτίς. Επαίτες φωνάζουν συνεχώς «Πεινάω!». Νέοι κυκλοφορούν με τις σύριγγες στο χέρι. 

«Από πού να ξεκινήσω;», εμφανίζεται να ρωτάει ο δήμαρχος. «Είναι διάχυτη η έλλειψη σεβασμού προς τους νόμους, είτε πρόκειται για την πορνεία, είτε για το τράφικινγκ, είτε για το εμπόριο ναρκωτικών και το οργανωμένο έγκλημα. Περίπου 7.000 ναρκομανείς βρίσκονται στις λίστες αναμονής για περίθαλψη. Γύρω από την οδό Πατησίων, υπάρχουν περιοχές που τελούν σε τέτοια ανομία, που δεν μπορείς να περπατήσεις μετά τις έξι το απόγευμα»!

Ο ίδιος εμφανίζεται στο ρεπορτάζ περίπου ως οσιομάρτυρας, που από το γραφείο του δεν βλέπει καν την Ακρόπολη, αλλά ένα δάσος από κεραίες, εγκατεστημένος σε ένα οργουελικό περιβάλλον!

Αποδίδει τα δεινά της Αθήνας στις αναποτελεσματικές πολιτικές πολλών χρόνων, αλλά πάντως την παρουσιάζει σε εντελώς παρακμιακή κατάσταση.

«Η κατάσταση είναι πολύ σοβαρή», εμφανίζεται να λέει. «Ο Δήμος είναι στα πρόθυρα της χρεοκοπίας, αν και η οικονομική του κατάσταση είναι ελαφρώς καλύτερη από του κράτους».

Η Σμιθ γράφει ότι δεν βοηθιέται στο έργο του, διότι η ελληνική πρωτεύουσα είναι ο καθρέφτης της ταραγμένης σύγχρονης ιστορίας της χώρας. 

«Η Αθήνα γίνεται πόλη ηλικιωμένων», λέει ο κ. Καμίνης, περιγράφοντας την μετανάστευση των νέων στο εξωτερικό για να βρουν δουλειά. «Η χώρα χάνει τα καλύτερα μυαλά της». 

Ακολουθεί μια περιγραφή της έκρυθμης κατάστασης που έχει προκληθεί από τα στίφη των μεταναστών, με αποτέλεσμα να βουλιάξει η Αθήνα στην ανομία.

Γίνεται αναφορά στο μαχαίρωμα του άτυχου Αθηναίου από δύο ξένους και στην αντίδραση των νεοναζί, που «τραβούσαν τους μετανάστες έξω από τα λεωφορεία και τους ξυλοκοπούσαν», γεγονός που, όπως αναφέρεται στο ρεπορτάζ, οδήγησε πολλούς υπουργούς να μιλούν για την εμφάνιση ενός είδους Κου Κλουξ Κλαν!

Και σα να μην έφθαναν οι περιγραφές της Σμιθ, η δημοσιογράφος γράφει πως ο δήμαρχος παραδέχεται ότι ούτε ο ίδιος «αισθάνεται πάντα ασφαλής» (!).

«Εννέα ξενοδοχεία στην περιοχή της Ομόνοιας έκλεισαν», λέει, αν και προσθέτει ότι βλέπει την κρίση ως «μεγάλη ευκαιρία» - ενώ η Σμιθ τον παρουσιάζει ως μεγάλο τιμωρό που πέταξε έξω από το Δημαρχείο τους διεφθαρμένους αξιωματούχους.

«Όλα είναι στο κόκκινο», της λέει ο κ. Καμίνης. «Δεν μπορούμε πια να δώσουμε κινητά τηλέφωνα στους υπαλλήλους, ούτε αυτοκίνητα στους αντιδημάρχους»! (Νατα και τα προβλήματα πολυτελείας!)

Μα δεν μου λέτε; Πάτε καλά; Όταν ο ίδιος ο δήμαρχος παρουσιάζει την Αθήνα ως την πόλη της ανομίας, της πορνείας, των ναρκωτικών και του εγκλήματος, υπάρχει περίπτωση να πατήσει τουρίστας;

Τίποτε το καλό δεν βρήκε να της πει αυτής της Σμιθ; (Διότι αν της το είπε, πάντως δεν δημοσιεύθηκε).

Τρέλα παθαίνετε όλοι μόλις έρχεται ένας ξένος και βάλει το κασετοφωνάκι μπροστά σας;

Τόσο μεγάλη μανία αυτοπροβολής σας έχει πιάσει;

Ξέρετε καμιά μεγαλούπολη που να μην έχει τις κακόφημες γειτονιές της από καταβολής κόσμου; 

Έχετε δοκιμάσει να περπατήσετε στις κακόφημες περιοχές του Λονδίνου;

Δεν υπάρχουν περιοχές στην Αθήνα όπου μπορείς να περπατήσεις με άνεση και να απολαύσεις την πόλη;

Τι διάβολο, μόνο η Πατησίων υπάρχει; Δεν υπάρχει η Ακρόπολη, η Πλάκα, το Σύνταγμα, οι αρχαιολογικοί χώροι, τα μουσεία;

Δεν υπάρχει η παραλία, μέχρι το Σούνιο και το Ναό του Ποσειδώνα – η ωραιότερη ριβιέρα του κόσμου;

Δεν υπάρχουν τα νησιά του Αργοσαρωνικού, το Μικρολίμανο, ένα σωρό περιοχές που μπορεί να επισκεφθεί κάποιος, ζώντας μοναδικές εμπειρίες;

Τι διάβολο, την μισείτε αυτή τη χώρα; Συναγωνίζεστε ο ένας τον άλλο σε μια σκυταλοδρομία δυσφήμησης, θέλοντας να παρουσιάσετε εαυτούς ως οσιομάρτυρες και ήρωες;

Με το ζόρι σας έβαλαν στα αξιώματά σας; 

Επιτέλους, έλεος! 

Υ.Γ. Και μήπως ο Guardian θα έπρεπε να ξεκινήσει καινούργιες στήλες; Για παράδειγμα «Italy in Crisis». Ή ακόμη – ακόμη «USA in Crisis»;

Tottenham Riots: It's Time for England to Confront Its Race-Related Issues, by Lola Adesioye, The Huffington Post 08/08/2011

In 2011, it's shameful that any of England's citizens feel that violence is the best way in which to express frustration. Watching live online footage of yesterday's rioting in Tottenham from America, I was thrown back to yesteryear.

This is what happened in Tottenham in 1985. Then, it was the Broadwater Farm riots which came about as a result of the death of a black woman, Cynthia Jarrett, who suffered a stroke while police conducted a search of her home. It was also what happened in Brixton that same year, shortly before the Broadwater Farm riot, when Jamaican Dorothy Groce was also shot (and subsequently paralysed) by police. I was five years old, but I remember watching the riots on TV at the time.

One would have expected that, over 25 years on, there would be more effective ways of dealing with such tensions and frustrations. The trouble is, there aren't. And while it is shameful that some of Tottenham's residents responded to the shooting of Mark Duggan by rioting, it's also disappointingly unsurprising.

Although I am a black Britain who is based in the US, I continue to be concerned about the future of the black population in my home country. In 2011, as in 1985, the underlying issues - in particular a sense that black Britons are routinely ill treated by the establishment, the police especially - still have not been resolved. Tensions between black youth and the police in the inner cities have not dissipated. On the contrary, suspicions are endemic. Black leadership is desperately lacking, and the country refuses to tackle these major challenges in any substantive way.

Black people - youth especially - around the country are being left high and dry. The result? Growing violent crime (with black men being overrepresented as both perpetrators and victims) and increasing social and political disaffection. If you re-read reports from the riots of the late 70s and 80s, the very same factors are still at work. The bottom line is that the UK still does not take its issues related to its black British citizens seriously and it is paying the price.

An example of the unwillingness to confront what's really going on here is evident in the commentary that has been provided about last night's Tottenham riots. Many have talked about social disadvantage, disenfranchisement and dissatisfied youth. While that's important, they have however, missed a vital element. These riots were about more than that. These riots were about the social disadvantage, disenfranchisement and disaffection of black people in particular.

Mark Duggan was not just another man - he was yet another black man who was shot and killed by the police. The commentators keep on talking about "the community" without specifying which community they are talking about. And while I understand that "community" is a broad term, let's be straight - this riot relates mostly to Tottenham's black community, a disproportionate minority of which is, as we saw last night, enough to cause significant trouble for the rest.

Cameron returns to London after a night of nihilism, by George Eaton, New Statesman 09/08/2011

When Nick Clegg warned of "Greek-style unrest" if a government with only a slim mandate brought in fierce spending cuts, he was widely derided. Not in conservative Britain, they said. But after last night's events, his words now look like an understatement.

In truth, however, it is spurious to draw any connection between the cuts (most of which have not been made) and the nihilistic destruction (as Ken Livingstone rather unwisely did last night) witnessed in London and other cities. In Croydon, a 144-year-old furniture shop was destroyed by fire,  with nearby homes also engulfed. Marc Reeves, the owner of the store, later tweeted: "That shop in Croydon is on a street that bears its name: Reeves Corner. Established by my gt gt grandfather in 1867. Now gone." In Enfield, a Sony distribution centre was set on fire, triggering a huge blaze that, six hours on, is still raging.

But amid the destruction there were some heartening scenes. In Hackney, the location of much of the worst rioting, Kurds (some of them former Peshmerga fighters) and Turks bravely defended their shops and restaurants with bats and sticks. A true English Defence League, as one friend put it to me. In a clip that has already gone viral, a West Indian matriarch from the same borough confronted the rioters and ordered them to stop.

By the early evening, however, the rioting had spread to Birmingham, with widespread looting around the Bull Ring shopping centre, and an empty police station set on fire. In Liverpool, cars were set alight as police officers were pelted with weapons, with similar acts later witnessed in Bristol and Nottingham.

As he will know, David Cameron now faces the biggest test of his leadership to date. Like Boris Johnson and Theresa May, he wisely cut short his holiday and returned to London this morning. For Labour, Ed Miliband and Harriet Harman did the same as several MPs called for Parliament to be recalled. In the short-term, we can expect the debate to focus on the police, who, by their own admission were overwhelmed last night. As the destruction mounted, there were calls, including from liberals, for the police to use water cannon (which would have to be imported from Northern Ireland) and rubber bullets, even for the army to be called in. But speaking this morning, May has already ruled out the use of cannon: "The way we police in Britain is not with water cannon. The way we police in Britain is on the streets and with the communities."

For now, an odd sort of calm reigns as the great clean up begins. But whether or not the rioting continues tonight, the country demands leadership. Will our politicians provide it?

If this is a war, the enemy, on the face of it, are the "lawless", the defenders are the law-abiding. An absence of morality can easily be found in the rioters and looters. How, we ask, could they attack their own community with such disregard? But the young people would reply "easily", because they feel they don't actually belong to the community. Community, they would say, has nothing to offer them. Instead, for years they have experienced themselves cut adrift from civil society's legitimate structures. Society relies on collaborative behaviour; individuals are held accountable because belonging brings personal benefit. Fear or shame of being alienated keeps most of us pro-social.

Working at street level in London, over a number of years, many of us have been concerned about large groups of young adults creating their own parallel antisocial communities with different rules. The individual is responsible for their own survival because the established community is perceived to provide nothing. Acquisition of goods through violence is justified in neighbourhoods where the notion of dog eat dog pervades and the top dog survives the best. The drug economy facilitates a parallel subculture with the drug dealer producing more fiscally efficient solutions than the social care agencies who are too under-resourced to compete.

The insidious flourishing of anti-establishment attitudes is paradoxically helped by the establishment. It grows when a child is dragged by their mother to social services screaming for help and security guards remove both; or in the shiny academies which, quietly, rid themselves of the most disturbed kids. Walk into the mental hospitals and there is nothing for the patients to do except peel the wallpaper. Go to the youth centre and you will find the staff have locked themselves up in the office because disturbed young men are dominating the space with their violent dogs. Walk on the estate stairwells with your baby in a buggy manoeuvring past the condoms, the needles, into the lift where the best outcome is that you will survive the urine stench and the worst is that you will be raped. The border police arrive at the neighbour's door to grab an "over-stayer" and his kids are screaming. British children with no legal papers have mothers surviving through prostitution and still there's not enough food on the table.

It's not one occasional attack on dignity, it's a repeated humiliation, being continuously dispossessed in a society rich with possession. Young, intelligent citizens of the ghetto seek an explanation for why they are at the receiving end of bleak Britain, condemned to a darkness where their humanity is not even valued enough to be helped. Savagery is a possibility within us all. Some of us have been lucky enough not to have to call upon it for survival; others, exhausted from failure, can justify resorting to it.

Our leaders still speak about how protecting the community is vital. The trouble is, the deal has gone sour. The community has selected who is worthy of help and who is not. In this false moral economy where the poor are described as dysfunctional, the community fails. One dimension of this failure is being acted out in the riots; the lawlessness is, suddenly, there for all to see. Less visible is the perverse insidious violence delivered through legitimate societal structures. Check out the price of failing to care.

I got a call yesterday morning. The kids gave me a run-down of what had happened in Brixton. A street party had been invaded by a group of young men out to grab. A few years ago, the kids who called me would have joined in, because they had nothing to lose. One had been permanently excluded from six schools. When he first arrived at Kids Company he cared so little that he would smash his head into a pane of glass and bite his own flesh off with rage. He'd think nothing of hurting others. After intensive social care and support he walked away when the riots began because he held more value in his membership of a community that has embraced him than a community that demanded his dark side.

It costs money to care. But it also costs money to clear up riots, savagery and antisocial behaviour. I leave it to you to do the financial and moral sums.
