The Conscience of a Liberal. Euro Agonistes, by Paul Krugman, The New York Times, 23/2/2012.
"It’s much harder, however, to say what the leaders of such peripheral economies should do. Unilateral default won’t solve the competitiveness problem, and at least for now would actually worsen the fiscal squeeze, since they’re all still running primary deficits. (That may change in a year or so). Euro exit would allow a quick devaluation, solving the competitiveness problem — but it would be hugely disruptive and would generate vast ill-will, so it’s hard to see any government taking that step until there really are no alternatives (which may soon be true for Greece, but not the others). So there’s a kind of trap. If you imagine yourself as the Prime Minister of such a country, what can you do? For the most part, I’m afraid, you plead with the troika to make the austerity demands less severe, you do what you can to accelerate improving competitiveness (which isn’t much), and you wait for things either to get gradually better via “internal devaluation” or to get worse and provide the economic and political environment in which euro exit becomes a real possibility".
To avoid depression, Greece needs a strategy for growth, by Timothy Garton Ash, The Guardian 22/02/2012
At the moment, there is still a solid majority in Greece for staying in the euro. Yet I find it hard to believe that the people of Greece can for months and years take the extreme pain demanded of them, with the only argument being "to leave the euro would be worse". The personal stories are already heartrending. The journalist, teacher, civil servant reduced to queueing at the soup kitchen. Students in a "lost generation" who have left the country or are about to. Unemployment at 21% and rising. An estimated 150,000 businesses that have closed. The minimum wage to be cut by more than one fifth. Thousands sleeping on the streets. The homeless by night; demonstrators by day. The octogenarian musician Mikis Theodorakis – a favourite with generations of German tourists – has called for an "uprising". And the government has to implement a bunch of further austerity and liberalisation measures over the next week, before it can get the €130bn bailout.
Sitting at his regular table in the pub, his Stammtisch, the reader of Germany's tabloid Bild may still mutter, "Well, they have only themselves to blame." But he would be wrong. It is true that a very large share of the blame lies with irresponsible, deceitful and corrupt Greek policies and business practices. But the scale of this mess, and the difficulty of getting out of it, also results from the fact that Greece was accepted into a badly designed, over-extended eurozone; that the way bond markets and banks (including German and French ones) treated that eurozone positively encouraged such irresponsibility; and that this bailout is as much to help those banks as it is to help Greece. So the blame must be shared.
Even if you disagree with that, the responsibility for getting out of it is still shared. This is obviously true so long as Greece remains in the eurozone; but even if Greece leaves, it will remain a member of the EU, and there will be a moral and historical responsibility that derives from having got into this mess together.
Then there's that troublesome thing we call, from the ancient Greek, democracy. Many European leaders privately agree with the German finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, that it would be better if Greece did not have an election scheduled for this April. Democracy? Ask the people? What an appalling idea. But the Greek people will be asked. Unless they are shown some realistic prospect of growth, parties opposed to the draconian terms of the bailout may yet gain a majority. No one will then be able (though some may privately wish) to follow Bertolt Brecht's famous ironic suggestion: dissolve the people and elect another.
At that moment, Angela Merkel will have more than a year to go to her own general election, which she is self-evidently determined to win. The eurozone will then be torn between the maximum pain that Greek voters will accept and the maximum price that Merkel believes German voters are prepared to pay. That dilemma – call it Merkel's fork – is just the most critical example of the deeper problem of this eurozone: the contradiction between already European policies and still national politics. You could have close, similar economies and still diverse politics (the nordozone that might have been). Or you could have fairly diverse economies if you had converged politics, with one eurozone election for one eurozone government. That common politics would then allow for the financial transfers to compensate for differences, as in the United States, and work towards economic convergence in the longer term. What is unsustainable is to have, within a single currency zone, both divergent national economies and divergent national politics.

Bombing Iran. Nobody should welcome the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran. But bombing the place is not the answer, The Economist, 25/2/2012.
The GOP’s Long War Against Women and Sex, by Jessica Valenti , The Nation 22/02/2012
Their fear of sex—of women’s sexuality in particular—has become a major media talking point, and a source of outrage among American women. But what I don’t understand is why anyone is surprised. Republicans have long based their agenda for women in a deep-rooted disdain for all things female. We’ve been down this road many, many times before.
When a picture of Congressman Darrell Issa’s all-male panel on birth control (the make-up of which prompted several Democratic women to walk out of the hearing) hit the Internet and mainstream media—I couldn’t help but be reminded of a similar picture of George W. Bush signing the “partial birth” abortion ban, surrounded by a group of smiling clapping men. All men. (Santorum was one of them.)
Dahlia Lithwick reported last week in Slate on a law that’s poised to pass in Virginia that would make it legal to penetrate abortion-seeking women against their wills by requiring a medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasound—a procedure that would count as rape under state law. Delegate David Englin told Lithwick that one Republican lawmaker told him that the invasive ultrasound wasn’t an issue because women seeking abortions had already made the decision to be “vaginally penetrated when they got pregnant.” Apparently once women have been penetrated, all other future penetrations should be no problem, consent notwithstanding.
Birth control: The right’s still winning, by Sarah Posner, Salon.com 23/02/2012
(...)The opponents of birth control insurance coverage don’t use an election as a metric. Sure, they’d love to win, but even a loss inspires them to redouble their efforts, not to pack up and go home after learning they are on the minority side of public opinion.
They are evangelists. If public opinion isn’t on their side, they’ll strive to change public opinion. They are dogged, well-financed and unrelenting. Their claims about the proper role of religion in governing and policymaking — which Democrats fail to contest forcefully enough — are eroding the separation of church and state, and taking down gains made in access to reproductive healthcare along with it.
Democrats have attempted to defuse the Republican framing of the issue as one of “religious freedom” by arguing that the real issue is women’s health. In making that argument, they regrettably glide over a crucial step in the logic. Yes, it’s undeniable that what is at stake here is reproductive healthcare. But in claiming that their religious beliefs entitle them to an exemption from a regulation requiring insurance coverage for birth control, clerics and their Republican allies are attempting to relitigate and overrule established Supreme Court jurisprudence in the court of public opinion — without pushback from Democrats.
As Scott Lemieux writes at Lawyers, Guns and Money, “a constitutional challenge to the contraception provision wouldn’t even rise to the level of being frivolous” under existing constitutional jurisprudence. Contrary to conservative claims, the Supreme Court has not interpreted the Free Exercise Clause as requiring such expansive religious exemptions. But in our current political climate, which causes Democrats to crouch in fear of being labeled anti-religion, such exemptions are nonetheless tucked away in legislation at the behest of the burgeoning religious lobbying industry, becoming law even if not required to protect free exercise rights.
